Equitable Distribution is the legal term for dividing marital assets and debts. When married couples separate, often the most difficult questions include determining who should pay the mortgage, who gets the house, or who should pay the credit cards.

There is a presumption, albeit rebuttable, that all marital assets and debts should be divided equally between husband and wife.
